Monday Morning Thoughts
dsimmer — Mon, 03/03/2008 - 14:06
You know you're a social networking geek when you try to Digg-down a post on a Facebook discussion board. You laugh, but I tried last night. No surprise, it didn't work.
MeLCat is one of the most underused tools in the post-collegiate era. Which is why I have been throwing a full-blown blitzkrieg at the Novi Public Library with all of my hold requests. I'm currently going through N.T. Wright's entire library as well as grabbing the Thomas Tallis music I can find. Remember, this is all free and available through many libraries in the state of Michigan (there is a list here).
Several shifts this week at Sbux, then a short week next week to get ready for the Pittsburgh trip. More details to follow on that I'm sure.
How to Protect Your Privacy on Facebook
dsimmer — Sat, 02/23/2008 - 04:15
By default, many privacy settings on Facebook are turned on. Your profile shares you on ads to your Facebook friends, any application you haven't installed can access all of your profile information, etc. What to do? Go crank up your privacy settings! I've outlined the instructions to protect your account and information from third-party applications and ads as much as possible. Pictures are included for free.
First of all, hop over to the privacy screen by clicking in the upper-right corner of any page.

After you do that, you'll see the "Privacy Overview" Page. Select "Applications and Ads" near the middle of the page.

Once the new menu appears, choose "Other Applications" and then un-tick the many boxes that are marked under the "What Other Users Can See" portion of the screen. This is crucial, because this is the information that is available to third-party applications that you have NOT installed on your profile. (In the rare case that you are not using the Facebook Platform, you can turn everything off).

Finally, the ad platform. Facebook has recently started to use your profile as advertisements on your friend's Facebook pages. Annoying, right? Turn it off by clicking on the "Ads" tab and changing the drop-down to "No One" as seen below.

I know this will help a few people out there, and hopefully many. I don't pimp my own pages on Digg, etc (I did that once and learned the error of my ways) but if you wouldn't mind sharing this on the social sites, I think a lot of people would appreciate it. Most people didn't realize how much information was being shared, so I hope this helps you reclaim a sense of protection as you browse the web.
Happy Facebooking.
Turns Out that These Are the Droids We're Looking For
dsimmer — Fri, 11/30/2007 - 16:29
I've been looking for an application that would sync my Twitter status and my Facebook status easily. Instead I've had lots of little go-betweens, from Twitter pulling my Facebook status and back and forth. I just ended up with lots of stupid duplications, etc. Until now. I found the droid I was looking for.
It's a Facebook application called TwitterSync and is available here (Facebook login required, I think). For those of you that use both services, it is a logical solution. Check it out. And give props to the guy who built it too.
DVD Series to check out

Random thoughts:
For the six or seven Hillsdale students who don't know, thefacebook.com is now available for Hillsdale students. If you head over to hillsdale.thefacebook.com you should be able to register and all that.
For those of you who know, every Sunday this past summer I drove from Traverse City to Grand Rapids (two hour drive) to go to church at Mars Hill Bible Church. While there I was introduced to a DVD-series that the minister and a production company have released called Nooma. You guys should definitely check them out. The Nooma site has them for sale or for those of you in Hillsdale you can come over to my house and borrow them. And please do not judge them already, after hearing that they are from a church and all. They are very thought provoking (each only 10 or 15 minutes a piece) and at the very least inspire a lot of discussion.
