ESPN SportsCenter, the television leader in sports news and coverage, is currently running a summer-long series titled "50 States in 50 Days" where they focus on a specific state for an entire day and discuss its contributions and unique aspects in the sporting world. Sunday's state, Michigan, featured exclusive coverage from the Buick Open in Grand Blanc and tales of the storied history of Michigan football (the winningest program of all time) and Detroit's professional teams. But no one was more shocked than I to see Homer Michigan's high school baseball team featured in a story on SportsCenter. I learned that Homer's baseball team set a national (yes, national!) record with 75 straight wins over two seasons; they won the state championship two years ago and lost in the finals game this year, going undefeated both regular seasons. And they only graduated one senior at the end of this past season so it would appear that they might have a dominating season again this coming year.
And I always thought of Homer as the only gas station on Moscow Rd. between Moscow and Spring Arbor. Apparently they are good for more than just replenishing an empty gas tank.
