Go Rent The Jacket

Amazon.com: DVD: The Jacket (2005)So I just finished watching The Jacket and I must say that it is well worth watching. It tells the story of Jack Starks, a Gulf War veteran who suffers a head wound, is accused of murdering a police officer and is institutionalized and experiences an boundary-stretching treatment for his alleged mental illness. I will resist the temptation to summarize the entire movie (there is a nice summary on Amazon at the above link) but I wil say this: the movie was highly underrated. A misleading advertising campaign portrayed the movie as a horror movie or at the least a cheap scare (Keira Knightly's "Jack Stark is dead!" line was the one most quotable from the trailer) while it really fit into a genre with "psycological thriller"-types like Butterfly Effect and Suspect Zero (another one that I really enjoyed yet was very much underadvertised and underrated). Issues of death, life, and predestination are prominant while other philosophical issues are raised throughout. Adrian Brody (Academny Award for The Piano, prominant roles in The Village and Dummy) does a very successful job as Starks while Keira Knightly plays his counterpart in the future-looking parts of the story. Needless to say, the movie is well worth renting and watching (it releases on DVD tomorrow). At a base level you will probably find the story entertaining and "cute" but I found the movie to be very thought-provoking and believable. Go watch it or buy it or whatever you do to get your film fix.
